SOVIET WW2 Medal for the Defense of the Caucasus. This is a GUARANTEED ORIGINAL WW2 issue Soviet medal, not a reproduction or a late issue! The medallion is made in brass and measures 32.0 mm wide, weighs 17.1 g not including the suspension and connecting link. The front has Russian inscription “For the Defense of Caucasus” and the depiction of Red Army tanks with tank-borne infantry surging forward over rugged terrain. Note the oil derricks and mountains in the background with airplanes flying overhead. There is an ornament of grapes and grape leaves along the edge (the Caucasus area was renowned for its wines and brandies, some of the best in the Soviet Union). On the reverse is the motto “For Our Soviet Motherland!” The medal is in VERY GOOD condition, especially for an Original WW2 era soldier’s award! The medal shows only minimal wear and some tiny dings, no dings or bumps. The raised details of the artwork and lettering are nicely preserved and very crisp on both sides. There is a very attractive even toning to the obverse with only a few tiny oxidation spots, whereas the reverse has some mild tarnish that is not too detractive. The medal comes on an early post-war suspension device, a single-layer model in brass. The ribbon is old, probably of the period, but perfectly sound and clean. The connecting link also appears to be of the period. The medal was issued to one of the Soviet defenders of the Caucasian region during the epic 1942-1943 battle. The area was of vital importance to both Hitler and Stalin as the Soviet Union’s primary source of oil and also as a conduit to Turkey and the Middle East. The battle for the Caucasus was one of the longest-running campaigns on the Eastern Front with a huge number of troops involved on both sides. After its conclusion with the withdrawal of the German Army Group A from the Kuban region into the isolation on the Crimean Peninsula, a lot of medals were awarded by the victorious Soviet side. Therefore, the Caucasus medal is among the most common among the Soviet WW2 campaign awards – which helps to keep the price low and makes it a great opportunity to the WW2 collector!
