Elgin Model 582 Stop-Watch Chronometer, Working excellent, Very Interesting This is a very interesting watch. It is an Elgin MilitaryStop-Watch from 1944. I’ve heard that it was used to calculate ground-speed and for “bombing runs. I’m not sure. What is interesting is how fast it is. The watch times 10 seconds at a time, recording each 10 second segment in a small bit at 12 that has two indexes from 1-5 and 6-10. It is surprising how fast it starts and runs. I’m told that it runs at 144,000 BPH (beats per hour). A usual railroad pocket watch, by comparison runs at about 18,000 BPR. Another unusual feature is that the stop-watch runs continuously. When you wind it… it runs whether you are timing or not. This is certainly why it can begin timing with absolutely no hesitation. It has been called a chronometer and I’m not surprised. When you buy a pocket watch, you should get at least 6 views. They are…. front (bezel on), front (bezel off), back, inside case-back, stem and movement. I use a macro lens so that buyers can see, for themselves what I am describing. Case: The case appears to be much like the standard cases on the Air Corps 4992B watches. If so… it’s a brass case with a “wash” of silver-metal. (Content unknown) This is a very thin coat. On the back there is a bunch of numbers indicating its military cataloging. With even a little use, these numbers wear off and then the back wears to a brass color. You can still see the faint numbers and the case does not show any brass(except in bright light) but the case is probably just at that point of wearing thru. The case has a hinged back and hinged cuvette which are both in good shape. The hinge is strong. Both back covers snap shut. The crown is sharp and winding is easy until the very end. The bow is tight with little wear.. I did not clean this watch after I received it because, honestly, I don’t know how. I would have no idea how to time it at that rate of speed. Crystal: I’m going to violate my own rule and NOT remove the bezel. It does not appear to be a screw on-off and if it snaps on-off, I don’t want to risk damaging the dial and delicate hands. The crystal is clear with no scratches or scuffs. Dial: The dial is military black and records 10 second intervals. At the completion of 10 seconds the smaller bit moves forward a notch. I don’t see any cracks, hairlines or scuffs on this dial. It appears perfect. I wouldn’t expect the usual cracks as I do not think this was a porcelain dial to begin with. Numerals are white and Arabic, clear and bright. Hands: The hands are white and very delicate. I see no signs of wear or rust on them which was another reason why I didn’t want to take-off the bezel Movement: The movement is 3 quarter nickle plate. 15 Jewels. Marked thus. Lettering is engraved and not color-filled. Very sharp. I see no scratches or damage to the plates. No damaskeeing. The movement runs extremely well. So fast that you can hardly see the balance and pallet. (See the videos and watch carefully). It runs very strong. The regulator is set a bit to the slow side but I have no idea how to determine whether this watch is running fast or slow. It probably needs a cleaning although I decided not to risk it. As long as it runs… I left it alone. When I say a watch is running, I mean… running. Nothing could be more disappointing than receiving a watch that does not work.
