Originally published in 1868, this slave narrative / memoir offered a glimpse of the personal side of President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln in the White House. Mrs. Keckley (1818-1907) was Mrs. Lincoln’s dressmaker, confidante, and friend. Keckley had been born enslaved, but eventually earned enough money to purchase her own freedom. Hers is also the story of a middle-class African American business woman working in Washington, DC and in other cities. The Lakeside Classics are reprints of fascinating first-person accounts in American history. These special books were not issued for sale.
