John Wayne Cowboy Hat, Styled after the Duke’s Civil War era cavalry hat in the classic western film “Hondo”. Distressed by designMaker: Resistol Estimated Era of Manufacture: 1980s Retailer: Husky Hat Co. Quality: 10X BeaverSize: measured at 58 cm which is a size 7 1/4 Color: Patina Silverbelly Brim Width: 3 1/2″ Crown Height: 5″ as creasedHat Band: The 1” OD green grosgrain ribbon with a classic bow came off a pre WW2 campaign hat and I made the cavalry band from some cording from an old German fedora, with some polyester ribbon melt wrapped around the knotted ends. Description of Felt: This started out as well worn vintage Resistol 10X beaver hat from the 40s or 50s and I basically rebuilt the whole hat. It was soaked in a hat cleaning solution for several days to remove the dirt and any smells, but I deliberately kept the aged patina color. Then I hot pressed and steam creased it into it’s current form. I darned a small tear on the left side of the brim and repaired another smaller one on top of the crown. I sewed in a replacement sweatband and attached both hat bands, then stiffened the felt with dewaxed hatter’s shellac and set it with an isopropyl alcohol misting. What I love most about a high quality felt hat like this is you just cant ruin it. Even when someone’s worn it to hell and back with a good cleaning and some knowledgeable TLC, it can be given a whole new life. Sweatband: The original sweatband was too damaged to repair so I replaced itNote: All my hats come with a handy hat stand like the one shown in the outdoor pics, but the hat box shown in the pics is not included due to the excessive cost of shipping large packages. I do have a number of hatboxes, so if you want a hatbox to go with your hat just pick one and I’ll discount or refund half the price of the box and you’ll only pay the shipping cost for the box with the hat shipped inside for free.
