Founded in 1878, Chicago Rawhide was born in the midst of tumultuous change. The nation and the world were being reshaped by rapidly advancing technology. Texas steers poured into the stockyards to feed a growing nation, and their hides became the raw material for CR’s tanned and treated belts. By 1920 the belt business was giving way to a new and more relevant product for the times — grease seals. In the early years of the century CR worked closely with Henry Ford and other automotive pioneers to produce leather products, including leather shaft seals for the emerging automotive industry. In fact, in 1928 CR introduced and patented the first integrated, self-contained shaft seal. It was a major improvement in retaining grease and extending the service life of the bearings. It was also the beginning of a relationship of problem solving and new product development with the automotive industry that continues to this day. In the mid-’30s, CR pioneered the development of custom formulating, compounding and molding elastomers (synthetic rubber) to develop higher performance materials. This led to other innovations in manufacturing processes, new sealing techniques to handle more demanding automotive and industrial applications, and the compounding and molding of various elastomer seals to improve consistency and quality. At the end of World War II, the company moved out of its Elston Avenue plant in Chicago to larger quarters in Elgin, where its world headquarters is located today. Over its 75 years of operation, the factory had a substantial impact on the economic, social, and cultural fabric of the Chippewa Valley. In 1931, the U.S. Rubber Company purchased a substantial interest in Gillette, but did not acquire a controlling interest until 1940. When World War II began, the U.S. government bought the plant and converted it into the Eau Claire Ordnance Plant. At its peak, it employed 6,200 workers, 61% of whom were women. As the war drew to a close, U.S. Rubber repurchased the plant. By 1951, a new 77,000-square-foot facility was built across the street to meet increased production demand. In 1967, U.S. Rubber unified all its trademarks and subsidiaries under the name Uniroyal, ushering in a new era for the factory. In 1986, Uniroyal and the B.F. Goodrich Company merged in a joint venture to become the Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company, at which time the plant employed 1,500 employees who were turning out 29,000 tires per day in a wide assortment of styles and sizes. Following the merger, the Michelin Group bought Uniroyal Goodrich in 1990, and eventually folded the plant in June 1992. The end of the era displaced 1,358 workers. While the closing of the factory was a huge blow to the local economy, Eau Claire developers Bill Cigan and Jack Kaiser bought the property in August 1992, renaming it Banbury Place. Today is a more than 1.9 million-square-foot complex that offers a wide array of space for professional office work, heavy manufacturing, commercial warehousing, luxury apartments, and indoor self-storage units, continuing its tremendous, century-long impact on the city.
